Italmatch acquired Akzo Nobel Arese manufacturing plant and related business

Italmatch Chemicals S.p.A. (“Italmatch”) has completed acquisition of Akzo Nobel manufacturing plant located in Arese, north of Milan and of the related Lube and Specialty Chemicals business. Arese plants manufacture polymeric and synthetic esters, for the lube oil and cosmetic/pharma markets, fatty acid amides for use in lube oil and polymer plastic markets as well as acyl chlorides used in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, surfactants and peroxide productions. Arese site is also fully equipped to handle phosphorus trichloride and manufacture phosphorous acid and its derivatives. Italmatch Chemicals is a leading European manufacturer of phosphorus derivatives for the production of lube oil additives, intermediates, flame retardants additives and other phosphorus based products. The company is headquartered in Genoa with production plants in Spoleto (Central Italy) and in China, (Kunming and Shanghai area). The key investment criteria for investing in Arese is the possibility to exploit the synergies between the two realities both in terms of market presence, with particular regard to increase and complement the product portfolio in lube and plastic markets, as well as in terms of technological synergies, with particular regard to phosphorus chlorination technology, in order to better exploit a leading position in growing niche and specialty markets. Sergio Iorio, Managing Director of Italmatch, said: “this is a further step to grow Italmatch as a leading company in specialty markets especially in the sectors of lube oil, as well as plastic additives where the historical experience of Italmatch will very positively integrate the know how and market presence developed by Akzo Nobel in Arese plant. In addition, the acquisition will complement and strengthen Italmatch technical position, by adding to the existing inorganic phosphorus technology also chlorination and phosphonic acid technologies. The active industrial approach combined with international experience of the two industrial realities will be valuable for the successful growth in the Company strategic sectors, taking also advantage of Italmatch historical foothold in China, to grow in the Asian markets.
